March 13th

5th Grade Math: We continued to review division today. I am noticing that sometimes the 5th graders find it difficult to know which number comes first in a division problem. It is not always the largest number. For example if the problem says 3 divided by 9, it could also be 3/9. The students are getting this mixed up and sometimes writing 9/3. Tonight's homework is a worksheet with problems like these on it. The test will be on Friday.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Congrats to Skylie and Chase who both finished their 36th story today! They both earned a book to enjoy at home!

March 5th

5th Grade Math: 5th Graders reviewed division and magnitude estimates today. We are continuing to learn the traditional way to do long division. Some of the students still struggle with this, and others think that it is an easier method. I want them to be exposed to different ways of dividing, and then they can chose which method they prefer. Magnitude estimates is how the 5th Graders estimate what place value their answer will be in when they are dividing. Their homework for tonight is to complete a division worksheet using both methods of division and also a worksheet on magnitude estimation.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Zach and Emily both earned prizes today! Zach finished his 42nd book and Emily completed her 30th! Keep up the excellent work both of you!!!

Thursday, March 1, 2012

March 1st

5th Grade Math: 5th Graders got a short lesson on long division today. I have noticed that some students were already using long division, so I am teaching them both methods and letting them chose which method they prefer to use. Long division is the traditional way of dividing. :) They do not have any division homework for tonight, but they will next week. Tonight, I want them to focus on rounding numbers. I have noticed that many of them know how to round, but they get confused when asked to round to a certain place value. Their homework is a worksheet, front and back, with numbers that they need to round. One side is rounding to the nearest whole number and the other side is rounding to the nearest tenth.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Kara finished her 18th story today and earned a piece of candy! Josh completed his 30th story and he earned a prize! Congrats to the both of you!!!

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Feb. 29th

5th Grade Math: Students are going to be doing a review of what we have been learning for the next couple of weeks. We will really be focusing in on division and making sure that every student knows how to divide with their eyes closed! :) Homework tonight is a division worksheet and page 120 in their workbooks.

4th Grade REWARDS: This week's lesson we reviewed the different vowel sounds, prefixes, and suffixes that we have been learning this year. We are then using that knowledge to sound out words that we don't know and reading them in sentences as well. We also do a spelling portion of the lesson that has students sounding out words and trying to spell them. I am noticing that all of the students are doing very well at this. They even amaze themselves at what big words they can spell!

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Two students earned books to take home today. Cierra finished her 24th story and Joe completed his 36th! Congratulations to the both of you!!!

5th Grade Math: Today we reviewed place value and talked a little bit about fractions and decimals. Most students find this topic very confusing, but we haven't gotten into that Unit yet. The problems on their homework that deals with these are a review for the students. However, don't panic if they aren't understanding it very well because we will go much more in depth with it shortly. :) The homework for tonight is pages 113 and 114 in their workbooks.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Feb. 23rd

5th Grade Math: Lately I have noticed that some students are not doing their homework. In order to make the students more responsible, I sent home a letter and a list of missing work with each child today. I expect the students to show them to their parents and return the bottom part signed, so I know that their parents have seen it. Tonight's homework is pages 111 and 112 in their workbooks. It is over using division in story problems and how to look at the remainder. Sometimes we need to round up to the nearest whole number and sometimes we need to ignore it.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Congrats to Xander who completed his 24th story today, earning him a book to take home! Keep up the great reading!

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Feb. 22nd

4th Grade Rewards: This past couple of weeks we have been reviewing the vowel combinations, prefixes, and suffixes that we have been learning this year. Students are using that knowledge to sound out longer words and also using them in sentences. I can tell that they are starting to see how they can use the strategies that we are learning in class and using them while reading! :)

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Kendal earned candy today after finishing her 30th book! Way to go Kendal!

Friday, February 17, 2012

Feb. 17th

5th Grade Math: We continued to go over how to divide using decimals. The main mistake the students seem to make is forgetting to estimate what the quotient will be and then forgetting to put the decimal back into their answer. Homework for tonight is Study Link 4-5 and workbook page 110.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: We had two students earn candy or a book today. Chase earned a piece of candy when he finished his 30th book and Cassie earned a book after she completed her 12th story. Congratulations to the two of you!

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Feb. 16th

5th Grade Math: Today we learned how to divide decimals. Students are to make an estimate of what place value the answer will be and then divide ignoring the decimal. Using their estimate, they then put the decimal in the answer. Tonight's homework is pages 108 & 109 in their workbooks. I am also collecting their workbooks tomorrow to grade them, so if they have any pages that they want to redo or complete for a late grade, make sure that it is done tomorrow.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Congratulations to Skylie and Terrick who each earned candy today! Skylie finished her 30th story and Terrick finished his 18th! Way to go!

Monday, February 13, 2012

Feb. 13th

5th Grade Math: Some students still need a little bit more practice on dividing using partial quotients, so they have another worksheet to complete using them. I also noticed that many of the kids did not finish their homework over the weekend, so I made sure to give each of them an extra copy, and I expect them to have it done on Wednesday. We also talked about how to use map scales to find distances. They were assigned workbook page 103 which has them figuring out distances using a map. Since tomorrow is Healthy Heart day (Valentine's Day) students will not be meeting for Math, so they have an extra night to do their homework.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: This week we have welcomed some new students into our classroom! Welcome Norah, Savannah, Riley, Gavin, & Jasmine! We hope that they are enjoying our class, learning, and becoming better readers! :)

Friday, February 10, 2012

Feb. 10th

5th Grade Math: We continued to go over how to divide using partial quotients. I spent the entire class period going over how to use the method and doing problems together as a class. Students can use the weekend to fix any mistakes that they made on the workbook pages and they also need to complete Study Links 4-2.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Congratulations to Zach who finished his 36th story today! He earned a book! Keep up the excellent reading! Also, some of our students have been working really hard this year at their reading, and they are right where they should be. This means that they are exited from the Read Naturally program. I am very happy for these students, but I will miss seeing them everyday in my classroom. I guess I will have to see them in the hall! :)

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Feb. 9th

5th Grade Math: Day 2 of Division. Today we reviewed partial products for division. They were first introduced to this method in 4th grade. I warned the students that parents might not be the best help for this because we were not taught this way when we were in school (Me included)! :) I did tell them that if they are really struggling with the concept that they could learn how to do the problems with their parents. Their SRB shows them exactly how to do the problems on page 22. Homework for tonight is to complete pages 101 and 102 in their workbook.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Evan earned a prize today after finishing his 30th story and Kyrsten earned a book after completing her 24th story! Congratulations to the both of you!

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Feb. 8th

5th Grade Math: 5th Graders started learning about division today. We talked about fact families, and how if you know your multiplication facts, then you can divide! This should be a review for the students, and they seemed to pick up on it quickly. Homework for tonight is page 99 and 100 in their workbooks.

4th Grade REWARDS: This week we started different kinds of lessons. In these lessons, we review a vowel sound and some prefixes and suffixes that we learned earlier this year. Then, we read sentences with big words in them, so students can use the strategies that we have been talking about. This way, when they are reading a book at school or at home, they will break up the word into small parts in order to figure out what the word is.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Sara completed her 24th book today and earned a book to take home! Way to go!

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Feb. 7th

Monday, February 6, 2012

Feb. 6th

5th Grade Math: Test is tomorrow! We played a Jeopardy review game today in class and some of the students seemed like they needed to look over the problems for the test again and practice using their protractors. I did give them an extra credit worksheet to take home that has them measuring angles using their protractor. I encourage all of the students to complete this and to look over their study guide for the test. They will turn in their study guide with their test.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Joe finished his thirtieth story today earning him a piece of candy! Also, Josh finished his twenty-fourth story earning him a book to take home. Congratulations to the both of you!

Friday, February 3, 2012

4th Grade Rewards: This week we talked about the /ea/ sound and the two ways it can be said. The first way is like meat, and the second way is like thread. We also reviewed different prefixes and suffixes that we have learned this year. At the end of the lesson, students practice spelling some of the challenging words that we went over that week. They did really well this week and most got them all correct! :)

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Congratulations to Ramsy who finished his 24th story today and earned a book to take home!

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Feb. 2nd

5th Grade Math: Students were given their study guides tonight as their homework. It is due tomorrow. I made the study guide from the test, so if they understand how to do all of the problems without help from a parent or their SRB, then they will do great on the test. We will go over all of the answers to the study guide tomorrow to make sure that all students know what to expect for the test.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Abbey finished her twelfth story today earning her a book to take home. This is the first book that she has earned and she was very excited to pick one out.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Feb. 1st

Can you believe that it is February already? Although I am getting ready for Spring with all of the nice weather we have been having! :)

5th Grade Math: Today we reviewed how to find a missing angle in a triangle. Some students noticed that there was a pattern between a straight line measure and a triangle. They are both equal to 180 degrees. The homework tonight is to complete the missing angle in a triangle worksheet. Tomorrow we will review everything that we have been learning in this unit and I will make sure to go over some of the problems that they are struggling with.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Jan. 31st

5th Grade Math: I have graded all of the pages in their workbooks up to Unit 4, or page 98. I have noticed that some students are not completing all of their assigned pages. Some students have quite a few that are not completed. Any page that has "please finish" on the top means that I have graded that page, but they need to complete it in order to recieve a grade. I also allow students to redo any of the pages that they want to get a better grade for. All they have to do is turn back in their workbook with a sticky note on the pages that they have completed or revised, so I know which pages to look at. :)

Today we talked about supplementary angles and how they form a 180 degree angle, or a straight angle. We also learned how to find the missing angle(s) by knowing the supplementary angle. Homework tonight is a worksheet about supplementary angles. Students will need to find the missing angle measures.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Aiden earned a prize today after he finished his 18th story! Way to go Aiden!

Jan. 26th

5th Grade Math: The 5th graders were given a short quiz today and I did give them an extra copy to take home to give to their parents or siblings. I can't say what the quiz is about because it would give away all the answers! :) The students had fun taking it and I told them that I would give them extra credit for giving the quiz to someone they know. I did tell them not to give it to anyone younger than them. They also have to complete the Math Boxes on pages 97 & 98 in their workbooks.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Three students earned books today! Skylie, Kailyn, & Greta all finished their 24th story earning them their second book so far this year! Way to go girls!

Jan. 25th

5th Grade Math: Today we learned about our Geometry Template and some of the different shapes that are on it. Students learned how to put some of the shapes together to make new shapes and also how to make interesting pictures with their template. This was not hard for most of them because they have been doing this all year in their spare time. :) Homework for tonight is pages 93, 94, 95, and 96 in their workbook. The instructions for these pages is on page 92. I am not expecting students to complete every single problem on these pages. Page 93 and 95 each has 5 problems, and I expect students to complete at least 3 of them on each page. They can put their answers on page 94 and 96.

4th Grade REWARDS: This week we learned about the /ea/ sound. Students learned to first try to say /ea/ like in meat. If that doesn't make a real word, they then try /ea/ like in thread. We also reviewed prefixes and suffixes. Students are getting better at decoding words!

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Evan finished his 24th story today earning him a book to take home! Congratulations!

Jan. 24th

5th Grade Math: 5th graders reviewed how many degrees are in a triangle, circle, and how to find the degrees for any kind of shape using the amount of sides it has. Many students were very confused by this, but I spent a great deal of time with it today, so they should know it. :) We also reviewed expanded notation and standard form for writing numbers. The homework for tonight is page 90 and 91 in the workbook.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Tyler earned a book today after completing his 24th story! Cierra and Emily both finished their 18th story, earning them a prize! Keep up the amazing work!

Jan. 23rd

5th Grade Math: Today we talked about how to find the sum of angles in different types of polygons. We found out that all we have to do is subtract 2 from the number of sides a shape has and multiply that number by 180. For example, a hexagon has six sides. If we subtract 6-2, it equals 4. 4 x 180= 720, so if we add all the angles together in a hexagon, it would equal 720 degrees. Students need to use this knowledge to complete the workbook pages assigned. They need to finish pages 88 & 89 for homework tonight. I also still need some tessellation projects from some students, so they need to work on that as well if they have not turned it in. I am taking off 10 percent points per day that it is late.

Jan. 20th

5th Grade Math: Remember that the tessellation project is due on Monday. I looked at all of what the students had done so far and we talked about any mistakes that they might have made. Not only to I want the shapes to tessellate, or repeat, but the colors as well. I also expect students to use at least 3 different colors on their tessellations. They also need to complete workbook pages 85 and 86, which we did together in class, so they should have this completed already.

Jan. 18th

5th Grade Math: Today we talked about tessellations a little more and students were given a project to work on about tessellations. They are making their own tessellations with grid paper that I provided for them. They are to make a tessellation on the sheet of paper with no white space remaining on the page. I expect students to use at least 3 colors on their tessellation. The finished products will go up on the wall in our classroom, so I want to see students using their best coloring! Neatness counts as part of the grade! :) This project is due Monday, January 23rd. Also for homework tonight that is due tomorrow is page 84 in their workbooks.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Students are still reading their stories and trying to beat their goals. Today Joe earned his 2nd book after he finished his 24th story! Wow, 24 books already! Also, Kyrsten earned candy after finishing her 18th book! Congratulations to both of you!

Jan. 17th

5th Grade Math: We continued to review polygons today and their properties. Students learned that a regular polygon is a polygon that has equal sides and equal angle measures. For their homework, they need to figure out if each regular polygon is able to tessellate, or repeat itself, without any gaps. They seemed to be very familiar with tessellations, but some of them struggled with using their template to make their own tessellation. Their Math homework for tonight is to complete workbook pages 81-83.

2nd and 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Charlotte completed her 12th story today earning her a book to take home! This was the first book that she earned, so she was really excited! :)

Jan. 11th

5th Grade Math: I hope that everyone stays well or gets better soon! 4 students were gone today! :(
Even though 1/3 of our class was gone, we still learned about different angles. Students learned about adjacent and vertical angles. We also learned that adjacent angles equal 180 degrees because together they form a straight line. Tonight's homework is pages 75 and 76 in the workbook.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: We had our first student today that finished his second folder of twelve stories! That means that he has completed a total of 24 stories so far! This person is Zach. He got to take home the stories that he has been reading in class as well as pick out a book to take home! Enjoy reading your new book!

Jan. 9th

5th Grade Math: All of the students have been really excited to start using their templates and today was the day that we started using them! We briefly went over how to use the protractor that is on their templates. They have used them before, but some of them are a little bit rusty on where to put their protractor and what numbers to use. Their homework for tonight is to complete pages 68 and 69 in their workbook. Tomorrow I will explain how to use the protractor again and have them remeasure the angles from tonight's homework.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: We have another student that earned a prize today, Kendal! She finished her 18th story and picked out a prize! :)

Jan. 6th

5th Grade Math: Today we started talking about angle measure. We are starting to find the measure of angles by imagining it as the middle point of a circle. We learned that a circle has 360 degrees. Using that information, we can find the measurement of an angle. Students are to complete pages 66 and 67 for homework.

4th Grade REWARDS: This past week we have been focusing on the different sound of g when it is followed by an e, i, or y, and vowel combinations that have more than one sound. When g is followed by an e, i, or y, it makes a /j/ sound. For example, ginger. Our goal is that the kids will use these strategies when they come to a word they don't know. :)

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Today Chase completed his 18th book earning him a prize! Congratulations!

Jan. 5th

5th Grade Math: We concluded our lessons about the U.S. Census today and reviewed open number sentences. An open number sentence is a math sentence that contains a variable. For example: 4 + 3 = a. For homework, students have to complete pages 64 & 65 in their workbooks. One page is reading story problems and writing an open number sentence that goes along with the story. The other is Math Boxes. Everything that I have assigned them is a review, so they should not have too much difficulty finishing them. We also went over every problem as a class today.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: Congrats to Skylie who finished her 18th story today! She earned a prize to take home with her.

Jan. 4th

5th Grade Math: We spent one more day on Censuses and how to read tables to find information. The students will need to have their SRB again tonight in order to do the homework assignment. Tonight they are expected to complete 3 workbook pages, 61-63. Page 61 is Math Boxes which is a review for them. Some of the topics we have not covered yet this year, but they have seen them in years past. The other two pages, 62 & 63, are Census questions. They both go together and ask the student to look at a table and find information.

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally:
Way to go Kailyn for finishing your 18th story today! She earned candy for her hard work.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a relaxing break and got to spend some extra time with friends and family! I know I did! :)

5th Grade Math: We just started Unit 3 today which is about Geometry. The first couple sections are about the U.S. Census and what we do with the data collected. The homework is page 60 in their workbooks and they also have to complete Study Links 3.1 worksheet. They will need their SRB to help them with these pages. Many students were a little rusty on their multiplication facts after break so remember to keep practicing!

2nd & 3rd Grade Read Naturally: We are back in full swing reading stories and completing questions. Congratulations to Evan and Joe who completed their 18th stories today earning them each prizes! Way to go boys!
